Johannesburg (also known as Jozi, JHB, Joburg and eGoli) is the largest city in South Africa and one of the 50 largest urban areas in the world. It is the provincial capital of Gauteng, the wealthiest province in South Africa.
While it is not one of South Africa’s three capital cities, it is the seat of the Constitutional Court. The city is located in the mineral-rich Witwatersrand range of hills and is the centre of the large-scale gold and diamond trade, established in 1886 following the discovery of gold on what had been a farm.
Historic Gold Mine Tour
You can expect to visit an amusement park which houses an old gold mine which closed in 1971. The park is themed around the gold rush that started in 1886. There is a museum dedicated to gold mining where visitors can see a gold-containing ore vein and watch how gold is poured into moulds.
An Apartheid Story
We will visit a pre-eminent museum that has since become a beacon of hope, showing the world how South Africa is coming to terms with its oppressive past and working towards a future that all South Africans can call their own. A series of 22 individual exhibition areas takes the visitor through a dramatic emotional journey that tells a story of a state-sanctioned system based on racial discrimination and the struggle of the majority to overthrow this tyranny.
For anyone wanting to understand and experience what apartheid (separatist) South Africa was really like, a visit to this museum is essential.
Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square
Sandton is an affluent suburb situated within the metro of Johannesburg. The name comes from the combination of two suburbs, Sandown and Bryanston. Urban decay in downtown Joburg caused many corporate offices to move from the CBD to Sandton in the 1990s.
It has since become the new financial district of South Africa and Joburg’s premier business centre. One of the main attractions is Nelson Mandela Square, located in Sandton City, which ranks among the largest shopping centres in Africa. Much of Joburg’s business tourism is centred on Sandton, which has a string of 5-star hotels.
